After a deep analysis of a set of significant examples of interactive documentaries (we have analyzed an initial volume of between 200 and 250 examples), we have establish a division between different types of navigation and interaction. Among the types of navigation we found the Split, the Temporal, the Spatial, the Testimonial, the Branching, the Hypertext, the Preferred, the Audiovisual, the Sound and the Simulated and Immersive navigation mode. Regarding the modalities of interaction, we found Applications 2.0 Interaction and Generative Interaction. The following table specifies the different navigation modes and their sub-modalities:
| MODALITIES | SUB MODALITIES |
| DIVIDED NAVIGATION MODE | THEMES, CHAPTERS, SEQUENCES, STORIES, TOPICS |
| TIME NAVIGATION MODE | CENTURIES, DECADES, YEARS, MONTHS, DAYS, DATES, EVENTS, PERIODS |
| SPATIAL NAVIGATION MODE | GEOGRAPHICAL MAP, GRAPHICAL MAP, VISUAL MAP, STADISTIC MAP, PHOTOGRAPHIC MAP |
| TESTIMONIAL NAVIGATION MODE | AUDIO/VIDEO (CHARACTERS)AUDIO/VIDEO (INTERVIEWED) |
| BRANCHED NAVIGATION MODE | CHOOSE OPTION TO PROGRESS |
| HIPERTEXTUAL NAVIGATION MODE | HIPERTEXTUAL SCHEME |
| PREFERENCIAL NAVIGATION MODE | DRAG MEDIA, ADDITION AND SUPRESSION BUTTONS |
| AUDIOVISUAL NAVIGATION MODE | AUDIO/VIDEO, VIDEO/ANIMATION, AUDIO/VIDEO/ANIMATION, AUDIO/PHOTOGRAPHY |
| SOUND NAVIGATION MODE | AUDIO, MUSIC |
| IMMERSIVE/SIMULATED NAVIGATION MODE | SIMULATIONS, INTERACTIVE GAME |

It should be noted that this proposal is being reviewed in order to be presented as part of the theoretical framework on interactive documentary study, which may be subject to changes in the future (PhD defense:“The interactive documentary as a new audiovisual genre. Approach to proposed definition, taxonomy and analysis model for the evaluation, design and production”, UPF 2007-2012).
