The content of this series focuses on an introduction and theoretical approach to the emerging genre of interactive documentary in the Spanish and Latin area. Several examples are cited and three significant projects produced in recent years in the Spanish area are discussed in depth: Guernika, pintura de guerra (CCRTVi and Haiku Media, 2007), Las Voces de la Memoria (RTVE, Association of Relatives of Alzheimer’s Disease Patients of Valencia and Barret Films, 2010), and Metamentaldoc (Universitat de Vic and Pintao, 2011).
Seat, las sombras del progreso [SEAT, the shadows of progress](2012)
Seat, las sombras del progreso is a webdocumentary that explains the history of the SEAT car factory (founded in 1950 by Franco as the model company that was at the head of the struggle for fair working conditions) with a new narrative. Produced by students of the Master’s Degree in Theory and Practice of Creative Documentary at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, this interactive documentary plays with an analogy between the phases of the manufacturing process in the former SEAT car assembly line and the issues discussed by the characters.

It provides the interesting option of discovering the movie from your own personal story. The application allows you to generate a text (90 words) in which you can give your opinion on current working conditions and the crisis in which we live. The application detects a number of keywords in your text and makes a piece (with your text as a subtitle) of about 40 seconds and then generates a film of about 15 minutes in relation to your story.

Figure 3. Logotype
I tu qui ets? is an interactive and audiovisual documentary that offers a realistic, everyday viewpoint of the lives of three characters: three girls aged from 8 to 10 years old who attend educational institutions where co-education is a priority. Co-education means equal education for both sexes without distinctions.

The project questions the current educational system attempting to determine whether the concept of co-education is really working within the classroom. This experimental study was possible thanks to the girls’ qualities, who were very natural and sincere and filled with a desire to learn. The project started as a collaboration between Communication Studies and the College of Education at the University of Vic, one of the most prestigious educational Colleges in Spain.

To finish off our overview of Spanish production, we must also mention some journalistic projects produced by “La información.com” and “Periodismo humano” that have formats tending towards hybrid proposals that alternate current affairs with more historical issues or personal reflections.
