8057368747_4c1ec8dfaf_zWe have some exciting news to share with you today! Not only do we have some fantastic keynotes already confirmed for i-Docs 2014, we can now also announce an exciting ‘Choose your own Documentary’ performance.

Inspired by the Choose Your Own Adventure phenomenon of the 1980’s - Choose Your Own Documentary tells the true story of the discovery by Nathan Penlington of a diary and his attempts to unravel its many mysteries. Part stand-up, part film documentary and part spoken word, it’s a unique and compelling interactive experience in which the audience play the most important role.

The show was previewed at Southbank Centre, London and at SXSW in Austin, Texas, in March, supported by ITV New and Hackney House, before premiering at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it won the prestigious Fringe First award.

With over 1500 possible versions, and multiple endings, each performance can differ from the last. At each twist and turn it’s the audience who dictate which paths the documentary takes – whether Nathan meets with success, failure, or the unexpected, depends on the choices audience members make via remote control.  Where will the story lead? How will the story end? You decide.

Touted by the NYTimes as “Ultimately a love letter to the ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ books and a directive to live actively and make choices”  and recently featured on BBC TV tech news programme Click, we’re really excited to be able to offer this performance to our delegates.

You can find out more about the performance here. Ticketing information will be available soon.  If you haven’t already, check out our Call for Participation, submissions close mid November.

  1. Chris Stewart Says:

Jess Linginton writes, “With over 1500 possible versions, and multiple endings, every performance is different.” With 1500 possible versions, it is possible two audiences will pick the same sequence independently. Therefore it is misleading to state that every performance is different.

  2. Jess Linington Says:

Although I concede that two audiences could potentially make the same choices, due to the amount of content in the show I think the probability of it happening would be quite low. I have however amended the copy to hopefully clear up any potentially misleading advertisement for the show.

  3. Nathan Penlington Says:

While we have yet to experience a repeat sequence of the show, I agree there is a possibility of audience votes resulting in the same choices. However, as Choose Your Own Documentary is essentially a live performance, no two shows will be the same!
