Four interactive storytelling hacks on different sides of the world are looking for participants – this is an exciting opportunity to get a project idea of the ground, with hacks giving the space for new ideas, collaboration and perhaps most importantly, the chance to create a working prototype. Feast your eyes on these four upcoming hacks:
First up and here in Bristol is the Crossover Docs Hackathon, in partnership with storytelling platform Racontr, that is running alongside the Encounters film festival:
When: 18 September
Where: Arnolfini, Bristol, UK
Cost: £60 (workshop is subsidised by Creative England)
A one day workshop creating interactive documentary experiences using Racontr.
Want to make your films more interactive?
Racontr provides storytellers, filmmakers and journalists everything they need to easily build, publish and share interactive stories. Used by Arte, Orange and France 24, Racontr allows storytellers to create beautiful and intuitive interactive experiences. This one-day workshop ran by Racontr presented by Sheffield Doc/Fest and Crossover Labs will teach you all you need to know to start creating your own interactive experiences.
Secondly, (and over to the other side of the world) is an event supported by Tribeca Hacks and part of the Antenna Documentary film festival in Sydney, Australia:
When: Friday 17th and Saturday 18th October, 2014
Where: Hub Sydney, Darlinghurst, Australia
Cost: Free – application/selection process
Deadline: 5pm, August 28
Calling all digital storytelling enthusiasts!
Are you a documentary filmmaker with a concept for an interactive doc? Or are you a tech-whiz or designer just itching to use your web skills to tell real-life stories? Antenna’s Documentary Hackathon provides the perfect opportunity to take the next step!
Antenna Documentary Film Festival, supported by Tribeca Hacks – an international series of workshops that brings together content creators and technology specialists – is presenting a Documentary Hackathon during the festival in October. This two-day intensive workshop aims to create connections between the documentary film industry and the tech/web design industry in Australia, and enables participants to walk away with a working prototype. There are some fascinating and innovative ideas brewing out there, we want to provide the spark and the connections to make them happen!
Next up, another Tribeca Hacks partnership in Europe with the DOK Leipzig festival:
When: Tuesday evening, October 28 through Thursday evening, October 30.
Where: Leipzig, Germany
Cost: Participation fee: 55 € per person (including 7% VAT).
We provide food and drinks during the event. Participants must take care of accommodation and travel to and from Leipzig for themselves.
We offer all Hackathon participants a reduced DOK Leipzig Festival accreditation of 50 € (instead of 100 €).
Deadline: September 2
The renowned Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) and DOK Leipzig are partnering for this innovative collaborative workshop-event focusing on interactive non-fiction storytelling, and exploring new tools and methods of story creation.
Building on DOK Leipzig’s expertise in Documentary and Animation, and continuing the Tribeca Hacks series of interactive approaches to storytelling, Tribeca Hacks <DOK> at DOK Leipzig will match media artists, filmmakers, digital storytellers with programmers, games developers and web designers to think stories and documentary from a different perspective.
Storytellers will be paired in advance with technologists and designers to form four to five multidisciplinary project teams. During this 3-day Hackathon they will define, develop and partly realize a project from the initial idea to a first prototype.
Lastly, Philo Van Kemenade and Gils Pradeau are running another one of their Popathon workshops, this time in the English seaside town of Brighton as part of the Brighton Digital Festival:
When: 12 & 13 September 2014
Where: Lighthouse Arts, Brighton, UK
Cost: Early bird tickets currently available for £20 until August 15. To make sure they got a good mixture of skills, tickets are released in equal sized batches for each type (storytellers, technologists, designers). This means that a ticket type, say designers, may be temporaraly sold out, until they’ve got an equal number of storytellers and technologists signed up.
Access for the final team presentations is free, so if you fancy seeing what gets produced you can sign up through their Eventbrite page.
Deadline: Until tickets sell out.
Popathon invites digital storytellers, technologists and designers to create storytelling projects that can only exist on the web. For one weekend you team up to brainstorm ideas, create open-source code and demo prototypes of your own web-native stories. This special edition of Popathon is presented in partnership with Lighthouse and Mozilla.
Visual storytelling has been with us since the beginning of times. Through the ages the way we tell stories has changed along with the evolution of different media. The capability of the web enables stories to be interactive, dynamic and participatory, allowing for engaging experiences around them. While this is hugely exciting, we believe a language of web-native storytelling is still developing and want to help that process along by hands-on collaboration.
Learn Do Share Event in the UK!
I was just about to post this article, when a Nina Simoes posted information about another event happening in the UK, not quite a hack, but very interesting(and free!) all the same:
