24th October 2014
1PM, Pervasive Media Studio, Bristol
We’re pleased to announce that multimedia artist and interactive storyteller Oscar Raby is coming to Bristol to deliver a lunch time talk at the Pervasive Media Studio.
Creator of the innovative and moving Assent project, Oscar is using virtual reality to tell the story of his father’s experiences in Chile during the 1970s regime:
In 1973 Oscar’s father witnessed the execution of a group of prisoners captured by the military regime in Chile, the army he was a part of. Raby turned to the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headset to tell his father’s story in Assent. This immersive autobiographical documentary game, developed using the Unity engine, puts the user in his father’s footsteps as he walks to the place where the execution happened.
This lunchtime talk is guest presented by Mandy Rose, co-director of i-Docs & director of the Digital Cultures Research Centre, University of the West of England.
Assent has been included in Documentary and New Media festivals in Australia, Canada, USA and the UK and won the Audience Award (Cross-Platform) at Sheffield DocFest 2014.
There will also be an opportunity to watch Assent on the Oculus Rift on a first come, first serve basis after the talk – so stick around if you can.
This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week – find out more here.
If you can’t catch Oscar in Bristol, he’ll also be in Liverpool at the XO Lab Oculus Rift hack:
We’re hosting the Oculus Rift Crossover Hack bringing together filmmakers, Unity developers and artists to create factual narratives for virtual reality. The hack led by creator of Assent, Oscar Raby is on the 18th-19th October at FACT in Liverpool and is supported by Creative Skillset, Oculus VR, FACT, BBC North and Sheffield Doc/Fest.
