i-Docs presents: Nonny De la Peña: Experiments in VR & ‘immersive journalism’

5th June 2015
1.00PM, Cinema 3, Watershed, Bristol

Dubbed the “Godmother of VR” and named by FastCompany’s CoCreate as “…one of the 13 people who make the world more creative”, Nonny De la Peña is pioneering the use of virtual reality gaming techniques that offer fully immersive experiences of news stories.

She has created a number of ‘immersive journalism’ pieces including Project Syria, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and more recently, a piece about the Trayvon Martin killing.

On the way up to the Sheffield DocFest Crossover Summit – where she is chairing the afternoon session on VR – Nonny will take this lunchtime talk to explore how she is pushing technological boundaries for narrative endeavours, including exploring 3D environments for fiction, news, and documentary.

As with all of the Pervasive Media Studio lunchtime talks, this event is not ticketed and spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Arrive a little early to avoid disappointment.

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which ordinarily takes place at the Studio every week, although this week is moving to Watershed’s Cinema 3 to accommodate as many people as possible.

Do you want to find out what is going on at the Pervasive Media Studio? Are you interested in meeting the residents, talking about a specific project or curious about pervasive media? Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday.

Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who’s interested in what we do.

After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm.
