Arnau Gifreu Castells is a lecturer, researcher and director in the audiovisual and multimedia field. He is a doctor in communications and has a master’s degree in digital arts from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). He has a bachelor’s degree in audiovisual communication from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
He is a research affiliate at the Open Documentary Lab (MIT, Massachussets Institute of Technology and part of the i-docs, of the i-docs Lab and the i-docs Conference (University of the West of England). He is a lecturer at the Universitat de Vic (UVIC) and consultant for the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). He is also a lecturer and tutor in various postgraduate courses, such as the master’s degree in creative documentary and the master’s degree in design and management of audiovisual production (UAB). He has published various book chapters and articles in his research area, interactive and transmedia non-fiction, and specifically on interactive documentaries.
He has organized several editions of the Musiclip Festival (2009-2011), coordinated e-Week (Digital Week of Vic 2012) and the interactive section of Docs Barcelona (2013). He has also collaborated in the European Youth Award (ICNM 2011-2012) and been a member of the International Commission/Territory of the “Barcelona Laboratori Cultural” (BLC).
He was a lecturer at Facultat de Comunicació Blanquerna (Universitat Ramón Llull) and at Facultat d’Empresa i Comunicació (UVIC, 2006-2013), directing Final Degree and Final Grade Projects (PFC/TFG) in the multimedia field. He is a founder and coordinator of UVIC_Lab (digital content laboratory) and the master’s degree in interactive digital communication, and a member of GRID (Research Group in Digital Interactions). He also collaborates in the research group Digidoc (UPF). In terms of research stays, he has been a research lecturer at Harvard University (Harvard Metalab 2013) and York University (Future Cinema Lab, Canada 2011-2012), and visiting lecturer at TAMK (Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Finland 2011), and at the Università degli Studi di Milano (Italy 2012).
He has been a member of different juries, notably the EYA Grand Jury (European Youth Award 2012) and the Short Film Festival of Manlleu (2011), among others. He was founder and coordinator of the projects interDOC and INF (Interactive NonFiction), interactive documentary and non-fiction observatories and production programs.
He has worked and collaborated in direction tasks for television stations such as 25TV or TVC and production companies such as Tasmania Films and MediaPro. He was chief editor for the journal “Ictineus” (DGR – Autonomous Government of Catalonia, El Periódico de Catalunya). In the field of interactive projects he has produced and co-directed interactive documentaries such as “Metamentaldoc”, “In a multi-color chip” and “I tu qui ets”, among others, and has collaborated in designing and creating the browsers of various Web portals, notably the production for the research group UNICA, the portal of the Observatori de la Producció Audiovisual (OPA) and the digital journal Formats, all linked to the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. He was part of the Funky Mobile Ideas team, which developed the project “Campusmovil” (2009-2011). He has also participated in projecting visuals at different events (VJ).
